2016: Mastodon versus GNU/Social
2017: Mastodon versus postActiv
2018: Mastodon versus Pleroma
2019: Mastodon versus Kroeg
2020: Mastodon versus Smilodon
2021: Mastodon versus SKYNet
2022: SKYNet versus The Borg
2023: The Borg versus like the one person still using pump.io
@adamk678 there's like this one social group who was on GNU/Social like 7 months before Mastodon started who REALLY hates Mastodon for Various Legitimate and Illegitimate Reasons and the lead developers of both postActiv and Pleroma came out of that social group. so there's just like... an existing social spat.
Kroeg and Smilodon aren't and I'm joking about the versus thing happening.
@anarchosaurus @shel I hope people can put their old bad blood aside, or at least take some measures to not get new people caught up in it unnecessarily. I don't want it to reach a point where old beefs fester and become too intimidating to new users that don't have the context to understand why "drama" is happening. I personally think it's great that there's all these different systems out there that can work together in a really cool way.
@kat oh yeah i made the same mistake a way way far back. when Charlottesville happened any of them left who I thought of as "decent" or "the good ones" i just couldn't even lie to myself about anymore.
@kat (because of how they responded to it)
@shel i've been getting as far as frequenting 4chan back then, and even though /g/ isn't /pol/ it's still quite a toxic dumpster.
i am glad i turned left eventually, and that helped me get on terms with myself, realising that i am trans and drastically changing views on things
@kat i'm happy for you
@kat politics comes into it A Lot. Mastodon leans left to far-left. GNU/Social leans right to alt-right.
@anarchosaurus @shel anything monoculture is a mistake and i absolutely despise gnome for this reason
@anarchosaurus @kat yeah I know and the devs behind gnu/social and OStatus are leftists and they're cool
basically April 2016 there was a mass migration of the alt-right to GNU/Social's english speaking nodes and they kinda took over and declared themselves to be GNU/Social. They developed postActiv, which was a popular fork of GNU/Social.
@kat @anarchosaurus also yeah monoculture is bad I like that we have peertube, kroeg, pleroma, smilodon, etc. i just have Difficulties with the pleroma developers and the people on the instances that tend to run pleroma. like, a pleroma dev called me a tr*nny k*ke in 2017 and a lot of pleroma instances post lolicon to the public timelines.... which isn't the fault of the pleroma software
@anarchosaurus @kat pleroma is legitimately good software i just feel weird about who makes it!!
@kaniini
2024: Pleroma Versus Pump.io ???
@kaniini 2025: BoerglodonNet.io versus Pleromadon CE
@kaniini oh shit
@shel 2099: The Entire Universe versus that one person who still uses IRC
@KitRedgrave @shel the last question
@KitRedgrave @shel you could've just @ me.
@shel Ahem. What about IRC?
2030: rainbowdash.net versus LinkedIn
20XX: Megaman vs Jorts
@shel can we get this but in a tournament bracket format
2050, meanwhile on irc...
@shel We're still going to have the Internet in 2023?
@shel This made me laugh but I still don't understand the whole "mastodon versus anything" situation since they all work together?
