@catonano people have floated making a tumblr-like version of this, namely @codeawayhaley was talking about this a while back, and i still think it's a great idea.

obviously that'd suffer from the same drawbacks as, well, tumblr, but there are people who write thoughtful and nuanced posts on tumblr still

on that note, something reddit does right is allow users to downvote. a common feature of most social networking sites is that the only feedback people get is the number of likes, reblogs, shares, comments, and attention in general. accruing points gives people a sense of accomplishment... on e.g. tumblr this can take the form of the number of notes - even if many of those notes are disapproving. there's no penalty expressed numerically; these are rewarded.
