The early game in WOW is honestly way better structured and more fun than in FF14

Like, WOW takes the time to introduce you to what your race is like, you spend a good couple hours just getting a feel for them and their place in the world and then you set off for your faction's capitol and are instantly doing regional quests that directly impact the world as a whole

In FF14, you're, uh. In a city with a confusing layout and given no context for anything you're doing, you just show up and are there now

Also, I'm sorry, I know everyone loves the FF14 races but it's a lot easier for new players to grasp "You can be a goblin or a dwarf or a werewolf" than "You can be a catboy or a bunnygirl or a big greenish person"

Anyway please keep in mind I am literally only talking about the first ~4 hours of FF14 because that's as much as I could deal with before turning it off, I am incredibly not speaking from a place of experience

@witchfynder_finder is this before or after that time walking thing because tbh I tried staring wow this year and it was miserable haha

@kat tbh I haven't played WOW in a few years so if the early game has changed lately, I don't know anything about it

@witchfynder_finder now you do your starter story, get pooped out at the main city, and magically have to know to talk to a certain NPC to turn on level sync for one of the expansion areas where you go grind fetch quests until you’re high enough level to do the new expansion, at which point you’re booted from whatever you were doing and can no longer use dungeon finder so you’re basically not able to actually finish any of them

so now the wow early experience is about 40% of a random expac and a lot of untelegraphed fantasy paperwork they don’t explain how to do outside of players making guesses on the forums

@kat Ohhh, yeah, I never did any of that, I just bounced around doing regional quests wherever NPCs told me to go instead of beelining straight for the newest schtuff

But yeah that sounds real bad

@witchfynder_finder i don’t think it’s possible to make a game with 10 years of content without the onboarding being real rough, but wow is like... a master class in how to actively discourage new players haha

@kat I had fun just bopping around old content where like 4 other people were, personally, but I'm not gonna say anyone is wrong for not wanting to do that =P

@witchfynder_finder honestly I’d love that if the time walking system wasn’t like “do this until you start actually having fun, then you’re done fuck you” haha

@kat @witchfynder_finder Yeah I also don't like Timewalking that much, although I mostly just level my alts through dungeons at this point. Classic is a way better way to experience the quests/stories

@witchfynder_finder people straight up insult you for like the first 10 levels, it's such a weird intro

@witchfynder_finder LOL I did notice that while starting FF14, it seems your class is more important to start?

@witchfynder_finder I do like that in WoW you can just jump straight in to dungeons, which are my favorite part of MMOs. A couple hours in to FF and I don't think I've unlocked them yet

@witchfynder_finder will absolutely restate that the best way I’ve found to start ffxiv is streaming to a friend or something who’s already into it and can give advice and make all the jokes and stuff haha

@kat Oh yeah on the off-chance I do end up actually giving FF14 another try I will absolutely be in a VC with someone who knows what they're doing lmao

@witchfynder_finder HMU if you want I’ll absolutely help you through the basics haha

@witchfynder_finder if anybody takes any this personally that sounds like a them problem lol

@witchfynder_finder oh yeah early game ffxiv was NOT fun for me (as someone who had never played an mmo before). i eventually got thru it on my second try but like the first times going through dungeons/trials and a lot about early ARR (and even later ARR and HW) were just flat out unenjoyable for me

i also dont find the setting terribly interesting even now except in the sense of "i have spent a lot of time here now so its familiar"

so its definitely not like, an unusual or spicy take i think

@witchfynder_finder god I wish there was a good Lalafell centric story 😭 idc about any of the other “races” I’m here to be a potato
