Why does #youtube sound *better* than spotify? Is there some sort of browser #equalizer tweaking I am un-aware of, or some #spotify app equalizer I am equally unaware of?
@serialised
I have the paid accoubt, and have high quality turned on - through my ears likely couldn't really tell a difference; it just feels like youtube playing the same music has more range, where spotify feels a lot more flat, but adjusting my system eq has no bearing on making one sound more or less like the other.
@viciousviscosity Opus vs Vorbis codec. There has been a lot of traffic on the Spotify forums with users asking them to upgrade to the newer standard, but unlike YouTube, they don’t seem to have a good way to re-encode their whole library on the fly.
@jay @viciousviscosity
Do they keep uncompressed songs around?
I can't see transcoding from one to the other would help sound quality.
@viciousviscosity are you listening to spotify free? See https://support.spotify.com/us/article/high-quality-streaming/ default bitrate is 128kbps.
As for youtube, the quality varies depending on the source material but it can be quite OK on high res videos.
