i'm part of @kinsey's system and i started existing 6 days ago. in a way having my own masto account is neat bc Kinsey always wanted to be open about being #plural but was never sure how to go about it. i'm not sure what else to say about myself? hi fediverse 😀
henlo again friends
- something that i just encountered, a line i kinda went "huh?" at: "Miss Itsuki and Miss Hiromi... does that make the two of you nerds?" i actually went back into the backlog when i was thinking about it and as i suspected, when i replayed the Japanese voiceover they say 'otaku', which like... i *guess* you could approximately translate as 'nerd', but (a) the cultural significance is lost that way; and (b) honestly it's not even necessary, because 'otaku' exists in English as a loanword
some examples:
- honorifics. they translate "$name-san" as "Miss $name" and there's a whole little bit where one character is asking another if she'd be okay with her using the "-chan" honorific that's translated as being about "nicknames" and even a line of dialogue in the conversation that makes no sense the way it's translated, without acknowledging the honorific: "Well, sis, you know you can call me anything you like, but I do prefer Nao." (the Japanese voiceover says "Nao-chan")
man, the translation choices in this visual novel i'm reading are so fuckin weird. they translate a bunch of things pretty literally that should arguably be left as-is because they're peculiarities of Japanese culture that aren't done justice by trying to express with approximate equivalents

A cool article about how exacting Fred Rogers was about the language used on his show so that it wouldn't confuse or accidentally mislead kids: https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2018/06/mr-rogers-neighborhood-talking-to-kids/562352/?single_page=true
I especially love the examples given.
If e3 is so good why didn't they make a e4
Fun fact: E3 is short for “Egg, Egg, Egg”
happy 1 week of being A Thing, That Exists to me 🎉
