Hey what's the games publication that didn't pay all those people? They did a Kickstarter I think? Can't remember their name

@spdrcstl Cairn was one that ended up being bought up by someone who really wanted to see it finished after the original creator blew all the money on running a convention for himself.

@kasshelfant huh, that's not even the one I was thinking of... guess it's an endemic problem huh

@spdrcstl Yeah, but I like to think that it's an exception, not the rule. On the flip side of that, Storm Hollow took YEARS to ship, but the devs ended up working with a publisher, getting a project manager to keep them on task, and eventually the game did indeed go out. Of the 49 projects I've backed, only one completely failed to ship, and another (Cairn) failed to deliver a physical item but did send me a PDF.

@spdrcstl killscreen did kickstarters for print runs iirc, and working on that was apparently good, but when they started a news site as well they either didn't pay a lot of freelancers or paid very poor rates

@coleoptera that might be who I'm thinking of... it was specifically a nonpayment thing rather than any issue with the Kickstarter itself

@spdrcstl it was complicated bc the site seemed to be running several different tiers of publication and article types so I don't remember all of the details and never personally worked for them but a lot of writers ended up really pissed at them when they tried to re launch after randomly disappearing

@spdrcstl @coleoptera

I *think* I remember indiestatik being another one that sank without paying its writers after a successful KS (don't quote me on the "not paying people" part though, I could be remembering wrong)

killscreen's always been shady af, and the new owners are no different, I know they misuse user data for example

@emptyfortress @spdrcstl yuuuuup my partner still gets emails to do "surveys!" from them despite never giving them his info deliberately and being openly negative about them on social media lol
