@sophia

also tired: Joining mastodon.social, not reading the rules, doing something stupid, treating it like a centralized Twitter-like, and then reeing about your free speech rights from your (still-federated) GS account after you get banned

@sophia Ok, but I want to point out that for many of us new users, Mastodon.Social is an entry point, and it's not unusual to feel lost about all those instances and about the way they work.

@sophia wired is running your own instance, ofc.; preferably something other than mastodong, even :P
@sophia I run my own instance and am not alone, thank you... this federation thing means you can talk to ... people on other servers! :P

@sophia
So what about joining an instance at near-random and staying because it might not be the perfect fit, but isn't intolerable?

OTOH, I do sometimes wonder what wonderful instance-local conversations I'm missing out on by not being on a math- or cs-focused instance.

@fizbin I recommend experimentation above all!

@fizbin @sophia I sometimes wonder about that too. I have a proxy account on anticapitalist.party solely to browse the local timeline there. Federation is cool, but the initial discovery phase is a bit difficult currently.

@trwnh @sophia I'm also a bit wary of ... it's hard to explain. You'd think that being well into my 40s I'd know myself and my preferences well, but I've got this nagging feeling that I've got to fight against an internal tendency to seek out a community that seems to fit me too well.

@fizbin @sophia Personally, I'm too generalistic. I have many interests, and I don't want to annoy others too much. On the birdsite, I had many accounts dedicated to just one interest (politics, tech, music, etc)

@sophia I’d be wired if I could move between instances

@sophia inspired: hosting your own mastodon server and expanding the fediverse while learning2internet

@sophia inspired: creating personal instance that is not mastodon but compatible with it, then creating another one but this time it's public

@Skoll3 i don't do advertising and PR. I'm not gonna go "quit using <X>, join <Y> it's better because reasons!".
@Skoll3 also when you are gonna quit using my nickname as your title?
@Skoll3 i don't care as much tbh, but it's annoying and theoretically harmful (identity theft, etc, etc), so it'd be nice if you'd change it at least eventually.
