2016: Mastodon versus GNU/Social
2017: Mastodon versus postActiv
2018: Mastodon versus Pleroma
2019: Mastodon versus Kroeg
2020: Mastodon versus Smilodon
2021: Mastodon versus SKYNet
2022: SKYNet versus The Borg
2023: The Borg versus like the one person still using pump.io

@shel This made me laugh but I still don't understand the whole "mastodon versus anything" situation since they all work together?

@adamk678 @shel couple of elitists hating on mastodon because it's le normie gnu social and stuff

@kat politics comes into it A Lot. Mastodon leans left to far-left. GNU/Social leans right to alt-right.

@shel @kat It wasn't always that way and I think this might apply mainly to the english speaking ones if indeed there's a pattern - there were a number of left-leaning GNU Social instances before Mastodon existed like the quitters (quitter.no, quitter.se, quitter.es, etc.) and a few anarchism focused instances. I just hope multiple technologies can be strong. A Mastodon monoculture is a mistake.

@anarchosaurus @kat yeah I know and the devs behind gnu/social and OStatus are leftists and they're cool

basically April 2016 there was a mass migration of the alt-right to GNU/Social's english speaking nodes and they kinda took over and declared themselves to be GNU/Social. They developed postActiv, which was a popular fork of GNU/Social.

@kat @anarchosaurus also yeah monoculture is bad I like that we have peertube, kroeg, pleroma, smilodon, etc. i just have Difficulties with the pleroma developers and the people on the instances that tend to run pleroma. like, a pleroma dev called me a tr*nny k*ke in 2017 and a lot of pleroma instances post lolicon to the public timelines.... which isn't the fault of the pleroma software

@shel @kat I'm really sorry that happened, it's hurtful. I hope that wider adoption can alter the culture a little. I like that I'm able to self-host pleroma on a pi and it's a simpler piece of software than Mastodon.

@anarchosaurus @kat pleroma is legitimately good software i just feel weird about who makes it!!

@shel @kat Of course, my intention isn't to make you feel bad for your opinion.
@shel @kat ah ok, I wasn't there quite that early (August 2016 I think I joined the fediverse) so I wouldn't have noticed the change.
