A bizarre screech rings out as you push your way through the dense foliage. You pause, holding your breath in. The sound came from far off, so you readjust your grip on the hunting rifle and keep moving. Though you haven't seen one of the Bugs in two days, you know from the alien cries and lack of other fauna that they're still out there.

You won't come back empty-handed this time.

I'm a human person (he/him) living on the east coast USA. By day I'm a software engineer but by night I waste all my time on mastodon 😁

I'm kind of just getting into #writing as a hobby, so this account is where I'm practicing. I'll probably post mostly short #scifi #tootfic. I appreciate any tips, critiques, and writing resources.

Beyond the dome's glass, the only light is the glowing crescent of Earth reflecting sunlight along it's edge. 133 rotations ago, the blue planet glowed with the lights from thousands of cities, but they've long since gone dark.

B-412 rolls up to a robotics bay next to other B units who are as silent as the dome's humans residents. As B-412's mind begins to slow into maintenance mode, a thought occurs.

The Moon is lonely.

Inside the dome, more of B-412's silent friends wait in their bunks, at the mess tables, and by the airlock doors.

Now that the sun has gone past the horizon, there isn't enough light to recharge B-412's solar cells to sustain its rock counting missions. To conserve energy, B-412 will have to stay in the dome and go into maintenance mode until later in the cycle when the sun peeks back around the other side of the moon.

B-412 has counted 3,749,195,246 rocks today. A new record! B-412 displays an animated smile on its display as it drives toward the unlit colony dome. A few hours ago, the crisp line of the sun's illumination moved past the moon's horizon.

133 rotations ago, B-412 had to enter and exit the dome through an airlock. Around the same as B-412's friends stopped responding to greetings, a large explosion tore a hole in the dome's outer barrier, making it easier for B-412 to come and go.

The Moon is quiet.

B-412 has circled the Earth over 133 times since last receiving a transmission. To pass the time, the little bot rolls along the surface of the Moon, counting rocks and visiting friends.

"Hello, Bill!" chirps B-412 happily as it passes Bill.

For the past 133.2783 rotations, Bill has not responded to greetings. He sits stoically in his spacesuit, tethered to a rover that hasn't moved in 133.2785 rotations.
