I really feel like SQL is one of the better things technologists have brought to the world. like "hey here's this human readable declarative data fetching system, you can usually clunk out a query that will return the results you want across disparate data sources without needing to know any relational algebra!"

@rrix yes, SQL and spreadsheet are worth more than any crypto currency

@kyzh yeah, I feel really similar feelings about programmable spreadsheets.

@rrix it's wonderful, a 40-year-old language that's

* the standard
* growing in popularity
* sees new implementations
* not fundamentally flawed in the way that C is

@bonzoesc * quite accessible to people without computer science degrees

@rrix first non-esoteric language i've helped implement too

@bonzoesc I've wanted to build a little in-memory SQL thing for a while now, just for the learning experience. build a little queryplanner. not a fan of writing a parser, but maybe that's what presto is for....

@rrix i really enjoyed the parser for riak_ql/Riak TS once I found jtc1sc32.org/doc/N2151-2200/32 to work from

didn't get/have to touch the planner, which I think ended up compiling BEAM modules in-memory and shipping them to other participants over the network

@rrix I wish there was a standard for the AST type thing underneath the "natural language" of the syntax but I am highly inclined to agree
