So a few years ago I prototyped a @matrix client and API library in #Emacs and gave up on it when I realized I didn't want to be trusted to implement E2E. Another emacs community member Alphapapa has since picked up development and has made great progress on the client without needing to worry about E2E themself. Meanwhile, the Matrix folks have been implementing a proxy server which presents encrypted rooms to clients incapable of encryption. Yet another fellow Emacs community member has written a blog post about how to connect to a matrix account with encrypted rooms, from Emacs.
Things are happening, momentum is building ...!
