Fun fact: getting up is much easier when you go to bed on time.
Other fun fact: going to bed on time is REALLY HARD.
Good evening, world! How's it going?
I am trying to fight my depression by Making Plans and Connecting With People and shit.
Figuring out how to do that without running out of energy is going to be interesting as usual!
Thank you, this has been your Hal Duncan spam.
What else?
I'm nearly done with his first novel, Vellum, and I'm told Ink is the second half of the same narrative. I'm obviously nowhere near done with this narrative but so far I thoroughly recommend it.
He has another series-ish thing called the Scruffians mythos which is about remaking yourself in your own image, and finding ways to resist oppression, and all kinds of good stuff.
Three months into this hole, and there's so much I haven't even touched on yet.
His blog: halduncan.com.
There is so much more. I'll give you one more specific rec, and then a bit more of an overview, and then I'll shut up.
So: The Behold of the Eye.
This is a fairy story of a different order. It has whimsy surrounding a deadly serious core. It has as much laughter as it has gut-punch. It is not an easy story. I will warn for death and suicidality.

NEXT UP. With this one, I can't link to the video reading, because it's only available on his Patreon (which, by the way, is 100% worth checking out).
It's a story called The Toymaker's Grief. I won't spoil it too hard, except to say that it's a very short piece told in a fairytale style, and that it's heartbreaking, and clear as crystal, and compassionate, and gorgeous.

The next poem I'll link is From Scotland With Love.
You may remember that around 45's inauguration, there was a doggerel poem posted, using Scottish-themed imagery to praise him. It was awful.
From Scotland With Love is his evisceration it. It's in Scots (though as a speaker of English English, I don't find it impenetrable). There is swearing. (IT'S GOOD OKAY.)

Except I can't figure out how CWs, actually work. Oh well, it's only a link.
I'll begin with my very favourite poem of his. The text of it is linked in my profile. I'll link the video of him reading it here, but below a CW.
Content notes: Profanity, sexually explicit content, lots and lots of rage.
To advertise it: Intersectionality. Did I mention the rage? Connection. Truth. HOPE.
GOOD EVENING, MASTODON.
So because I won a great prize yesterday, in the form of being awarded PIP (HUZZAH), I promised I would introduce you guys to my favourite writer.
So... people, people, my people. Introducing: THE.... Sodomite Hal Duncan!!
He is a queer, Scots author of poetry and strange fiction. At its best, his work is razor-sharp, fiercely intelligent, deeply compassionate, incandescently angry, and intersectional as fuck. Yes, all at the same time.
He's changed my life a bit.
@bellezebub WELl HELLO THERE!:grinning:
PSA animated gifs cause issues for some folks, please use static images for avatars and put gifs under a CW
I am trying to make myself get up and clean my teeth so I can go to bed. Moving is hard. Even the promise of Hal Duncan to read isn't doing it.
get uuuuuuup, LC.
People are people, but, assholes are a special kind of people who masquerade as people but are really just assholes
As a prize... well, first I'm gonna do some tag-modding on my DW comm, but then maybe you guys get a Hal Duncan primer because I am full of squee and at like 80% of his first novel (IT'S BRILLIANT OKAY).
World, I was awarded PIP! I got the letter this morning! I AM SO THRILLED AND RELIEVED I CAN'T EVEN. This means I get to plan things, including moving out of my parents' house! And like, make a budget, and shit.
THANK FUCK.
Okay, world. Gonna open my window, clean my teeth and read a very little bit of book before I sleep.
Local/federated timelines look strangely cosy. I remember times in LiveJournal when a) there was a single feed of all new entries, b) if you was a paid user you could see a “friends of friends” feed that was kinda similar to what local/federated timelines are there to offer. But now, thinking of it, it would be really fun to have your own timeline in mastodon federated from only those who you follow. Could be a great way to discover new people.
As I was doing my meds, it occurred to me that I now have a whole new social network to bore silly about my Current Favourite Writer. And I can squee and waffle as much as I like here!
Not tonight though.
SORRY IN ADVANCE, MASTODON. (This is the only apology you'll get, probably...)
UPDATE: I forgot that it's Sunday and I have to sort out next week's meds before I'm allowed to go to sleep.
GRUMP.
Watching a Jessica Jones and putting pills in boxes, sigh.
