hello everyone. I'm nicohman. i write comically niche programs in Rust and NodeJS. an attempted Hacker with a capital Steven Levy. adhd inattentive type, on stimulants. pretty hard leftist, somewhere in the vicinity of technosocialism (think cd's Walkaway). will make an effort to cw politics. into games, linux, books, activism, #unixporn, and transhumanism. lgbtq+ welcome, but am cis myself. looking forward to what will hopefully be a somewhat more constructive social media experience.
very light spoilers: the end of the f***king world, sex education Show more
Watched netflix's Sex Education and The End of the F***ing World this weekend. Actually both pretty good, though I liked SE more. Doubt the latter's season 2 will be any good, but am looking forward to the former's second season.
Hey those of you using #rust and specifically the zip-rs crate, do you know of any alternatives that are faster? The zip-rs crate seems to have at least a 3x slowdown compared to the zip CLI tool, even when I'm using all cores.
Hey I made that command-line GOG client so you can download, update and install #GOG games without having to bother with browser stuff. Also claim Connect games automatically. Made in rust, and the API library I made for it is now available for anyone else who wants to code their own rust-based GOG thing. Go check it out and break it!
Got a raspberry pi zero w just laying around but can't decide what to do with it. Any suggestions for cool/useful projects? #RaspberryPi
Those of you using #gog games on linux, what would you like to see in a CLI tool meant to help you download and manage GOG games? I've already got basic game downloading & auto-installing, plus GOG Connect integrations. Anything else that you would want?
also i realize that this my first toot in over two months but it's my way of saying that damnit, i made some cool-ass shit while i was gone, and this is going to be 'nico posting a combination of weirdly specific technical complaints and links to stuff i wrote while i was gone starter week'. name is a WIP.
Pro tip for any other students out there: The github student pack is pretty great, including free private repos as long as you've got a school email account: https://education.github.com/
Go check it out!
Hackers is amazing because it’s simultaneously an absolutely abysmal movie and a fantastic movie; I love it for the subculture aspect despite its many flaws. Sure, the villain rides a skateboard and demands to be called ‘The Plague’, but I think it actually has legitimate merit beyond just ironic viewing. It’s still fun to laugh at it, but I honestly enjoy watching it now and then. Recommend it.
Now working on a butlerd interface crate for rust so that you can build all kinds of #itch.io related stuff. Eidolon’s finally going to get some great itch support!
I wrote a program to text me every morning what time(if any) I have to be at school. It scrapes my school’s Trumba calendar to figure out what schedule is being used today. I absolutely love automating little stuff like this. It sounds weird but it makes feel like I’m in the future. </self-aggrandizing>
Heading to #PAXWest tomorrow; anyone have any must-sees they want to recommend to me? Feeling pretty excited, definitely going to check out artifact
me being dumb and proud Show more
Ok, this probably sounds dumb to some of you guys, but my packages on crates.io have broken 750 downloads between them both, and I'm really happy about that. Not much, but the most users I've every had. It's just nice to feel like you're making stuff other people want.
