further ideas: saccharin is soluble in ethanol. that may reduce the large-droplet problem, as fairly pure ethanol is cheap, easy to find, and evaporates quickly. plus evaporated ethanol etc. are also easy smells to detect

covid prevention, local offer, boosts/shares ok

I ordered about 100 duckbill-style n95 respirators re: upthread and won't be burning through that many of them that quickly. (should ship by the 24th or earlier.) if anyone around Whatcom county in Washington state needs a few and ordering them themselves doesn't work, feel free to drop me a DM.

i don't really care about being recompensated. they came out to about $0.83 a pop, so if it makes you feel better to give me a couple bucks, pay it forward to a service worker, or whatever that's fine by me

some family *might* be able to hand some off in the Seattle area too so feel free to reach out

So given the extreme transmission rates of Omicron, I've gotten thinking about a couple things:

can I get my household reputable n95 masks? yes, and for ~$0.80 to $2.00 each! projectn95.org/

and can I do pretty-good home fit testing? Medical fit testing works like this: the testee puts on their respirator, then a plastic hood and the tester sprays a few pumps of saccharine spray on the inside (to both sides, not directly at the mask). if the testee can't smell the sweet after moving their head around a little, reading something aloud, ..., it's a pass. otherwise, something needs fixing.

i'm thinking about picking up some plain clear plastic bags, some saccharine pellets, and a bulb-style perfume sprayer to try to mix a DIY solution. the main idea is to help e.g. local grocery workers/teachers/... with a low-cost kit (medical ones cost ~$120).

does anyone who has been fit tested see a problem with this plan? any advice/ideas?

cryptocurrency

remember the halcyon days, where bitcoin was a weird and funny parlor trick to chat about with scifi nerds and the Public only cared about it mediumly more than it deserved

remember when dogecoin was a funny joke in a silly/boneheaded little subculture, and not an el*n m*** driven investment vehicle for you to gamble your life savings on in hopes of being able to afford a place to live

remember the days when you could go "haha! i bought this shirt with fake internet money, isn't this hilarious?" and network fees weren't so high that that was impossible?

remember the bad ol' times, instead of the worse now times?

uspol, child abuse, covid

it's pretty fucked up that kids in the US often have one (1) place to go where anyone is looking after them (e.g. ensuring that they're fed), and that that place is public schools

now like MAYBE there's some problems with sending your children to the COVID Box everyday during these current COVID Times just as a concept on its own.

fucked up that teachers, who imo *should* be spending most of their time focused on helping their students learn to e.g. count and spell are also supposed to march dutifully into the Box because remote schooling is actively harming (e.g. starving) them. fucked up that the school system is most kids' only point of contact with any type of social work/welfare

dear lazyweb: anyone know the part/an interchangable part for the headphone jack in a ? obviously i don't want to buy an entire replacement mainboard for such a simple damaged part, and i can solder at least well enough to swap it out it if i can find a part that fits. And there's like 1000 different TRRS jacks on Digikey to sift through

(bonus points if you also know the part for the MEMS mic too, but in that case, my skill dictates that i may be better off buying a replacement daughterboard πŸ˜†)

wow, i just got "HackathonDAO" spam to my Github email (which effectively goes to Github and srht)

fuck outta here

it's frustrating to me that We Don't Make 'Em Like We Used To. building hardware around being straightforward to mend is harshly underrated

the mere idea of trying to fix a conventional laptop makes me wanna pick up a MNT Reform tbh, shoutouts to @mntmn for the boldly classy design

related: i'm mad that i'm gonna have to stock up on thermal pads/paste to reattach the heat pipes for this laptop that i'm going to have to take apart to MAYBE fix it. (the firmware seems Very Fucked after a Probably bad flash, and obnoxiously the cmos battery appears to only be accessible if you take everything apart and pull the mobo out)

mrw character in a gdq run pets a dog: :blobreach:

so over the past few days a SPECTACULAR number of my computers have just randomly failed in bizarre and surprising ways.

this is frustrating because it's gonna be really costly to keep up with everything, and also kinda beautiful because it's worth remembering that our technological world is built mostly with spit, glue, and scotch tape and maintained mostly with hope and prayers

i should've done something practical with my life like going to clown school

nasin mani li pakala

i'm really bad at buying things that i need/things to fix other things because i'm too used to living like i have zero money

i do not have zero money. i should probably learn that there are a lot of practical and functional differences between zero and infinite money
