also fairly newly added to _Organic Syntheses_, a general method for preparation of nitriles by oxidation of primary amines with "Oxone", potassium peroxymonosulfate (co-crystallized with KHSO4 and K2SO4), catalyzed by a fairly well-known catalyst for organic oxidations, the stable free radical 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl or TEMPO (here used as the 4-acetamido derivative.) the real oxidant is an oxammonium salt produced by Oxone oxidation of the TEMPO.
