rather interesting new method in _Organic Syntheses_ for preparing biaryls through carbon-carbon coupling. the key intermediate is an _arylzinc pivalate_ which may be prepared by a number of methods, most readily from aryl Grignard reagents and zinc pivalate. unlike the parent Grignard reagents the arylzinc pivalates are moderately stable to handling in air.
shown in the picture is a complicated bespoke Pd complex as the catalyst, but apparently CoCl2 works for some of these couplings?
