I don't get why we need the pixelfed thing. We can post pictures AND text here, so why do we need another thing with only pictures? If you wanted to see pictures only surely you could use/develop some sort of a filter?
I really don't get it.
I use the Instagram, but only because of all the content that's there and nowhere else. Hate the platform though. Why would we want another thing like that?

@communeva I think it's not about "we" as everyone who uses the Fediverse, but specifically about the people who have fun with such a thing :)

Afaik, filtering out everything that doesn't have a picture is exactly what is going to happen if you follow a non-pixelfed account from pixelfed.

@communeva And the "there and nowhere else" problem doesn't really apply to pixelfed, because once it has federation support (or does it already? idk), I will be able to follow pixelfed accs from my Mastodon account.

What I am trying to say is: I don't think I'll use pixelfed any time soon either, I'm just not that into posting pictures anymore, but I kind of love that it exists and how it is going to work together with the rest of the fediverse.

@maunzikation hm, yes, that part I understand.
What I don't get is why people have fun with the thing, because I don't see what function it adds. Is it just that the surface looks a little nicer? Because they can post pictures here otherwise

@maunzikation also it seems that I cannot follow the pixelfed accounts from here which is sad. I don't want to make a new account anywhere

@communeva @maunzikation I think that might be in the future, I read today that federation still doesn't work.

@distel @maunzikation okay. That's good. Then I still don't understand why people need it but as long as I can follow them without signing on to somewhere else it doesn't bother me too much :)

@communeva pixelfed opened a beta server before the basic functions were complete, to let people try it and give feedback and stuff. It will become possible to follow from and to other things that use activitypub, such as Mastodon and Pleroma!

As for what it adds - idk! Like one thing it does is have Instagram-like filters to put on pics directly on the site. But tbh a different interface is already a good point imo, since many people have issues with the Mastodon one.

@communeva also I guess for someone only interested in posting pictures, something optimized to do exactly that might feel smoother and more fun. But whatever the reasons may be, I think I'm just happy about cool federated stuff that works for different kinds of people :)
