Toot! is good, but it's still capped at a limit of 500 characters with no way to change it
The only third-party app I've ever seen that handles this the right way is Subway Tooter, and I wish more people would copy it: the default post limit is 500 characters, because the way fedi software is currently set up, there's no way for the app to automatically know what the post limit is
But if you go into the settings, you can set a custom character limit, on a per-server basis if necessary. If you set that to a number higher than your server supports, you get an error message if you exceed it, but that's fine, because if I'm going in and changing that setting, it means I know what the limit is. I could set it to exactly 1024, the mathematically correct number of characters for a post
I mean I rarely want to type more than five hundred characters on a phone, but it does happen occasionally, and when it does it's nice to have the option
It'd be especially nice if other web clients did this too
meta, character limits
I'm increasingly less convinced that character limits are even necessary. The masto frontend automatically does a cutaway for long posts, which I know isn't a universal feature, but detecting the number of characters in a post and at the very least replacing un-CW'd posts above a certain threshold with "[long post, click here to open]" seems like it *should* be trivial to implement.
Yes some people will use this to troll people, but they're probably going to be on instances I have blocked anyway. The vast majority of people I see on my timeline follow the etiquette of putting long posts behind a CW, and I feel like all having a character limit does is hamper communication and foster misunderstanding
I mean of course there has to be SOME limit so people can't just upload megabytes of text and fuck up the server. The pleroma default of 5000 characters is probably plenty
