The fact that they're not the result of a human/genie union, but can be of any race, and thus can inherit physical traits that match them.

It allows for these wondrous juxtapositions in which the natures of the parents oppose each other, and create a strange union of both in the offspring.
I really love that about the Genasi.

You could have a fire genasi with a triton parent, making them look somewhat like a merfolk, but with red scales and with an affinity for fire.
You might find an air genasi with a duergar parent, making them short, stout, perhaps with darker skin and a beard that resembles mist, even though the nature of the duergar leans towards an affinity with the earth.
