psa: don't post screenshots of wifi lists from your phone / computer on the internet unless you're okay with people knowing where you are
that list of nearby wifi names can be used to pinpoint you with scary accuracy sometimes
i wrote a script to do this using public data that could find where i was within my house, narrowed down a german friend to the apartment building she lives in, and a similar method has been used to locate someone who took videos of themselves setting up certain game consoles before their official release, down to one of 3 possible homes, and i've tested it on a lot of reddit posts about funny wifi names with pretty good results
@ky0ko here's another little pointless piece of data (or more accurately, anecdote) for you: i live within range of someone's wifi network called "No Wifi For You!"
@reedlindwurm i can narrow it down to three likely locations based on that info and a small amount of info from your post history
if there is a network near you called "Spaceship Earth" or "Buttjuice" then that narrows it down a lot more
or if there isn't, that also narrows it down lol
my data is incomplete though, and it could be wrong!
@reedlindwurm and if you're not in the US it's definitely wrong. Though if you're in Canada, specifically, i'm pretty sure i know where you are but something in your posting history made me think that specific location was unlikely so i'd have a question or two
@reedlindwurm also i'm assuming the capitalization is exactly as you said, if it's not the number of guesses changes dramatically
@ky0ko Oh you're actually trying to guess this, haha! I don't remember the exact capitalization, though, and it seems I'm not picking it up at the moment, though I've certainly seen it before.
No Spaceship Earth or Buttjuice though.
@ky0ko That said, what are your guesses?
@reedlindwurm
Are you in Austin TX?
@ky0ko no
also FWIW it's "No Wifi For You" without the exclamation point; does that narrow it down by much?
@reedlindwurm that does the opposite of narrow it down actually
bigger data set to work with
i'll note that the data set i'm looking at is not case sensitive
it *has* case, but the searching functionality does not pay attention to it
i'm not using my script atm, the script can do case sensitive, but i don't have it on hand
wonder if i can find it
@ky0ko Well to be fair I shouldn't be too surprised that other people have made this same joke
@ky0ko
indeed; WiFi lists, along with a list of findable Bluetooth devices, and cell-tower ranging data, are what Location Services use to locate you when GPS is disabled...
@ky0ko
(a list of WiFi APs all called “attwifi”)
