hi! i'm jeremy. i just moved here from mastodon.social i'm a #computerscience and #math student currently, but i'm interested in many areas (for example, i'm currently working my way through mit ocw courses on a bunch of other topics). i enjoy #reading and #podcasts and #games and am currently working on familiarizing myself with #openbsd to use it as a daily driver. i'm also a leftist and interested in political theory.

but when you really think of it, what does "best" even mean? if you ask a question like, "who is the best basketball player?" to a bunch of basketball fans, you're almost certainly gonna start an argument, because, like, by what measure? "best" is such a one-dimensional qualifier, but precious little in reality is so simple, so using the term "best" just results in bruised/bloated egos and a bunch of unnecessary competition in areas we would benefit much more from cooperation.

but this made me think about other motivational cliches which incorporated the term,"best". like, "do your best". wtf does that mean??? what i do is what i do, there is no other event to compare that to. or, "try your best". this is about the same, i'll end up exerting as much effort as i do, there is no alternative

i hate the term "best". i recently saw an ad that said "be the best at everything you do", and, being me, thought way too hard about what that means. is it 'be the best at X for every activity X in which you participate'? ok, what happens when i'm competing against someone else who saw this ad? who are you rooting for then, faceless corporation?

does anyone know of any good, cheap #ebook readers with e-ink screens and no internet connectivity? do these even exist? if not, how hard would it be to diy one out of something like a pi0? i like kindles, but i don't want amazon services shoved on me.
