(this is new in the last few days)

This is one of the most spectacular sunsets I ever saw while working at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile.

The Atacama Desert is extremely dry, but clouds do show up sometimes. That day there were several dark clouds releasing very light rain that vaporised before reaching the ground. These wispy veils (called "virga") were lit by the golden sunset light, creating a lovely contrast with the blue sky above.

#feditips for new people: One of the most powerful things about the fediverse's anti-harassment tools is that you can block entire poorly-moderated instances at once. Look for "domain blocks," "instance mutes," or similar in your settings; this applies based on the domain name (which you can see after the second @ in a username), rather than individual users.

A side effect of federation is some possibly-unexpected hashtag behavior. When you use a hashtag, your post will show up in hashtag searches on every server *where your post has reached*. There is no network-wide search.

So if I set up a search column on hashtag-ART here on weirder dot earth, I will get slightly different results than I do with the same search column in my account on mastodon dot art. In the latter case, I'll *probably* get better results, both because there ...

Tip for folks new to Mastodon who like Tweetdeck - Settings >Appearance >Advanced Interface gives you a multi-column view where you can save searches and favorite feeds (notifications, local timeline, federated timeline, etc)

FYI for newbies

Twitter has algorithms to get you engaged. Mastodon does not. So in order to enjoy Mastodon you have to take some time to reach out and find content and follow folks that you enjoy. Don't expect Mastodon to send you random popular posts to keep you engaged, you have to curate your own feed. But this is good! It gives you control.

I've always liked Pinafore for Mastodon, especially for phone/mobile (, but if you're coming from Twitter and feeling super disoriented or overwhelmed by the UI, Halcyon seems amazing -

aaah this one is also cool: Nadine Lavan manipulated vocal parameters digitally to make an artificial "left-handed voice" and "right-handed voice" distinction. for example, in one experiment lefthanders were made to have a higher F2, and righthanders lower; in another, lefthanders have a lower F2 but a highter F0, and so on.

after a short training, people were able to identify voices as totally left-handed or clearly right-handed, using all provided cues (including 'unnatural' patters like increased F2+decreased F0).

point being, the strong bimodal distribution we see in voice gender, while clearly based on hormonal anatomics, is shaped by the gender binary, not the other way around. we know from previous experiments that prepubescent children already have voices identifiable as 'male' or 'female', before any hormones have a chance to act; likely because boys identifying as boys will speak in a boyishly manner, subconsciously. if we had a society with a typical spectral pattern for 3 genders, or 5, or handedness, or political spectrum etc., then people would subconsciously reproduce and identify those acoustic, too.

Lavan, Nadine. "Left-handed voices? Examining the perceptual learning of novel person characteristics from the voice."

@SuricrasiaOnline I would not be surprised if your next entry was fully Simon StΓ₯lenhag art but in 4k
