I have spent a lot of time explaining to Russians and Ukrainians that Telegram is not a safe communications channel (I even wrote a Telegram Harm Reduction Guide) but people still use Telegram and they still tell me they do so because it's "safe" and "secure."

I hope that at the very least Telegram users in eastern Ukraine will stop.

@mlliarm If the attacker you're trying to protect against is the Russian government, I would absolutely suggest WhatsApp over Telegram. This is why digital privacy and security advice must be tailored to specific threat models.

@atoponce @notyoursweetbab @shipp there have been some attempts to solve the problem of code verification since, CloudFlare+WhatsApp's web extension is probably most high profile.

Big news at Freedom of the Press Foundation: Edward Snowden is stepping down as board President. Rainey Reitman, longtime leader on the board, takes his place. freedom.press/news/welcoming-r

Feeling irrationally sad as I watch @micahflee's Semiphemeral do its thing. Not so much the tweet deletions as the unlikes, it feels like I'm withdrawing hugs from folks.

@xor tempted to go see it, but the reviews here are all giving it 7z

@sporksmith @huertanix it does not, tho something like apt-cacher would be straightforward enough to do. But unless you were running a bunch of standalone VMs the benefit would be minimal.

@starfleetjobs clarification request: PTSD *in* fluidic space lifeforms, or *caused by* fluidic space lifeforms?

Like I think there's way too much linear thinking that I see already about how Mastodon is the ship you're jumping on as a replacement for Twitter and it's just totally wrongheaded based on what I've seen here from longer term users. If this is to become all about performance and popularity then it's a sadly wasted opportunity to reevaluate what we should be doing online with one another. What have we learned and how does that get put into practice here? It's not the same place you were before.

TTC must have brainstormed some new delay reasons - the streetcar driver has announced we're having a 2-minute pause for Remembrance Day.

@saila Mastodon might be a bit heavy, but I set up Pleroma on a weedy VPS a while back and it was pretty painless.

5 courses into a 9-course (wait it's actually 10, I'm gonna die) banquet for a Shaolin master, and I may have to tap out. Not very Kung Fu of me.
