stella aka "the jackal" aka the greatest grifter of all time fell in love with a gangster's wife and they ran away together and went to hide out in new orleans and raise a child for a few years, signing each other's power of attorney since they couldn't actually marry. the abusive "husband" tracks them down and shows up and threatens them, cause of course he still has legal power over his "wife" and was about to kill stella when the wife shoots him. stella takes responsibility so the wife takes the kid and stella never seems them again
decades later stella has alzheimer's ( ) and barely remembers her wife, besides having all her possessions and her house stolen by a corrupt judge (redundant phrase, i know) and Elder Abuse Incorporated
