Rain 🚱 @grainloom

fun fact: because of the still crappy syntax, you cannot tag #45 on the

I've already brought up how bullshit this is but the devs don't seem to care.

@grainloom @Elizafox There's nothing stopping you from contributing to Mastodon and fixing that. It doesn't seem like something higher in priority than a lof of Mastodons other issues.

@z @Elizafox They wouldn't merge it. It's a simple regex they have to change, if they wanted to change it, they would have.

It's not a high priority because not many users actually notice it when Masto doesn't use the tags the want.

You can't even have hyphens in tags.

@grainloom @Elizafox
"They wouldn't merge a quality of life feature" - doubtful.

If someone made a PR extending tag functionality / fixing tag issues I would be very surprised to see it outright rejected.

It also doesn't matter since you can make changes to your own instance anyways, if you fork Mastodon. That's what sleeping.town does since it implements a bunch of stuff.

I don't know Mastodon's architecture but it may not necessarily be as simple as a quick regex fix, depending on how the data is stored, etc.

Just look at the relevant issues on Github, ok?

@grainloom @Elizafox Github's issues interface is abysmal, so unless you link it directly I won't try to search that quagmire.

Also, I said make _pull requests_ not issues. Anyone can make an issue, they have 840 of them right now. Making a _pull request_ is different, stuff is much more liable to be implemented when there's already a working solution.

If you just make an issue, there's no obligation for someone to complete it. Just because it's important _to you_ doesn't mean it's any more important than the other 839 open issues.
@grainloom ok? Sometimes disagreements happen. At this point it would probably be good to remind ourselves that Gargron is a human being, not a fix-what-I-want-machine. Mastodon has a million things going on and stuff that needs to be improved / fixed too.

I would bet that if someone made a _working implementation_ of such fixes, he would have no problem merging it in.

This is an issue, but not (imo) an especially pertinent one. Your best options here are to re-open the issue & continue discussion, or much more importantly implement the fix yourself or find someone who's interested in that.

@z It doesn't actually seem like I can reopen it but eh, worth a try.

at least give us tag higlighting, how hard would that be??? it's just a fricking regex

@grainloom I have a better idea: full text search, but only for a separate field "search text" attached to posts.

so I could attach "complaining about full text search and tags" to this post and you could look it up with full text search. It's opt-in FTS.
