“How to be a Fan of Problematic Things” is probably a decent starting point for relating to gender as a trans person: it’s OK to like what you like, but be critical and be willing to accept others’ criticism.

But also, we do need more proper feminist analysis in trans spaces, not least to counter a tendency to various kinds of essentialism that goes with “born this way”. (I’m perpetually surprised by how little there is - I suspect TERFs have made people wary of feminism and feminists in general.)

Got some complicated thoughts about this “sexism in trans spaces” thread but they’re only half formed at this point. Mostly, the tension between supporting and subverting existing gender roles and gender signifiers is always going to be there - particularly for binary trans people - because we have to construct our identities out of what we’re given by the existing culture.

to suggest that gnc behavior from men is *innately female* or is a precursor to coming out as femme, particularly when you have no way of knowing the agab of the man in question, is /incredibly/ invalidating for trans men to hear. especially when we, as a community, perform those gnc behaviors at much higher rates than most cis male communities
