Understand my words with full knowledge and reverence for my connection to the void.

My data is not yours to own.

You came here and asked to sell us things, then tracked us with the things you sold us.

You came here and begged for trust, which many gave you, then betrayed it by selling our secrets.

Then you took away our nation.

My data is not yours to own.

@TheGibson That resonates with me right now. Just spent the last few weeks extricating myself from the Google ecosystem, and it's hard. A surprising outgrowth of this was OTHER PEOPLE being annoyed that I've had the audacity to stop using Google products: "How am I supposed to share anything with you?" etc.

I dunno, choose tools that don't enforce arbitrary limits on my choices? :)

@feoh @thegibson

People end up thinking there's nothing outside the walled garden, that Google or Facebook *are* the Internet.

@faehnrich @TheGibson Oh totally! And it's SO frustrating! I have friends who won't respond to me unless I use their favorite thing - Failbook Messanger or GChat or whatever. So I've stopped trying to send text messages and just call them now :)

@feoh @thegibson

Oooh, actual phone calls, now they'll really never message you back.

I was surprised to run into this when I pulled back from Facebook and Google.

Bullseye. People seem to have forgot how to breathe without Google...

@feoh @thegibson Interestingly, the easiest piece for me to #degoogle was search: Set default engine to #DuckDuckGo and I’m off to the races.

I’ve yet to find a good replacement for GDocs. Remote live collaboration without a client install is super handy. Have you found good alternatives?

@mkb @feoh @thegibson You can do Open/Libreoffice docs in Nextcloud with the right plugins.

@feoh @mkb @thegibson Looks like that might be it, yeah.

Disclaimer: I've only heard it can be done, I haven't set it up on my own NC yet.

@feoh @mkb @thegibson Unfortunately I won't be testing that one since it requires docker -_-

@wraidd @mkb @TheGibson Doesn't *require* docker AFAIK it's just a convenient way to install. It's just a set of PHP code, right?

@feoh @mkb @thegibson I don't see a way to install it without using Docker but I might not be looking in the right places?

I'm talking specifically about the Collabora server, not nextcloud itself

@wraidd @mkb @TheGibson Why thank you :) My digital (and analog, for that matter :) hearts can use all the blessings they can get!

@wraidd @mkb @TheGibson Or better yet DuckDuckGo :) Also I'm gonna remove poor TheGibson from future replies to this thread because yowza topic drift :)

@feoh @wraidd

Since #DuckDuckGo is my primary search engine, I've been looking for a good verb to use in place of "google." "Duck" is short and to the point but requires explanation.

@mkb @wraidd I know what you mean. It's boring, but what about simply "search" or "web search"? Boring as heck but damn functional :)

@feoh @wraidd I'm a little embarrassed that did not occur to me. :)

My personal recommendation is to utilise a @nextcloud installation. They have collaborative document editing, and they're open source!

@feoh @thegibson It's the same with Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter. If you go to any commercial events both Linkedin and Twitter are an assumed dependency.
