River @eribloodlust

I just quit my freelance gig with privacyweekberlin and I really don't recommend other web developers work for them. They expect so much in terms of work and unpaid meetings and your time is worth more than that.

Also special warning for women - the project lead has: expected emotional labour from me for his relationship, ignored my no repeatedly when I don't want to explain sexuality, and even made a threat about hitting his girlfriend while only I was around. I was expected to be Web dev and therapist.

I know that it's not going to make me look good in the lefty Linux hacker scene in Berlin to post publicly about the misogyny I faced, but I'm fucking done keeping quiet for the sake of my reputation amongst a bunch of bros who try to claim all the benefits of being 'inclusive nice guys' while they keep fucking over women again and again. Its more important to me to be honest abt my experieces and I know that the minority of cool people in that scene will understand.

Lefty Linux hacker boys are equally interested in getting free labour, either technical or emotional, from women as startup bros.

@eribloodlust fwiw, I think it’s good that you speak up.

@eribloodlust Nothing will change if you don't tell about your experiences. Germany, even "progtessive" Berlin, has a long way to go to come anywhere close to equality. So speak up. The bros can dislike it, but you'll be saving other women from them.

@eribloodlust
You're doing a favour to Berlin's hacking community by speaking out about it, though I do understand you're also taking some amount of personal risk regarding your future interactions within that community.

It is important that people understand that this is happening, otherwise there won't be any awareness and no opportunity for change. In a healthy community, what you're doing shouldn't be a risky thing to do.

I hope your next freelance gig will work out as you expect it to.

Did you follow this advise from the CoC?

"If you are being harassed, notice someone else being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of the Privacy Week Berlin 2018 staff immediately."

privacyweek.berlin/#coc

@eribloodlust

@lutzhorn @eribloodlust I don't think this is helpful advice when the project lead himself is behaving inappropriately?

@resist_berlin @eribloodlust Then maybe the CoC is not worth the screen space it is displayed on.

@lutzhorn @eribloodlust Exactly, this is more like it. CoCs are quite often just figleafs to whitewash your project.

@eribloodlust FWIW, I met one person of the privacyweekberlin orga at a barcamp recently and it was a … weird and puzzling experience. They talked a lot with very little (if anything) to say. Fits the picture you painted. Speaking out about behaviour like this is hard but important – thank you again for doing it.

@rixx
Im fairly sure that was the person I had unpleasant interactions with... But wow thanks for affirming, this really makes me feel better :)
