the database has its own dedicated M.2 SSD with an ext4 filesystem on it. that does only hold 4 billion files... but there's no way our database managed to saturate that, is there??

@diodelass iirc there's a per-process limit of 1024 file descriptors

@diodelass that is, 1024 *open* at any given time.

(i don't know if the number is 1024, but it's something in that ballpark)
