okay. so.
- yes
- that is literally how heart rate monitors work. that's the whole thing
- this is not even slightly new, fuck your shitty journalism

shitty tech news

gods, this is so fucking embarrassing for you

shitty tech news

like, the whole way that optical heart rate monitors work is by measuring the difference in absorbance between red light and infrared light, which are absorbed differently by oxygenated and unoxygenated blood?
we guess the ones with green light are common too, maybe that's another method
iac the point is that this Feature that's being couched as groundbreaking health technology or whatever is literally as old as those little clamps they put on your finger at the doctor's office

shitty tech news

we don't know this, but we also suspect that the "ECG feature" this article is talking about is really just a misnomer for the concentration:time plot that you can get from an optical sensor, because we understand a real ECG generally requires chest electrodes?

iac we have to go get an ECG in a couple days so we'll find out

shitty tech news

anyway, we look forward to people claiming that other smartwatch vendors "stole Apple's idea" when they change their UIs to mention blood oxygen instead of eliding it

shitty tech news

@diodelass the watch ecg isn't optical, but it is based on wrist electrodes built into the watch so it's not as good as the chest electrodes are.

shitty tech news

@diodelass at first i thought the cw means "bad news related to tech", not "information about tech that's bad at being news"...

shitty tech news

@diodelass they were supposed to be able to do blood oxygen monitoring from the very beginning but couldn’t get it accurate enough for FDA approval, iirc
