"people shouldn't have to CW $topic! $topic is nothing to be ashamed of!"

listen to us:
- we don't CW things out of shame.
- we don't ask for things to be CWed because we think you shouldn't post them at all.
- CWs are not the mark of that which should be kept out of sight.
- CWs are used so that people with particular sensitivities to a topic don't have to unfollow or block you if you post it.
- CWs do not narrow your audience; they broaden it.

we've had this discussion so many times.

@diodelass i agree with this -generally-, but the conversation I’ve seen recently that makes me have some pause around this (or seek nuance) is regarding folks in poverty asking for donations that they need to survive. While I’m down with the concept of tagging such things, i don’t feel comfortable telling people trying to eat that their attempts to obtain food are wrong/demand them to ask for help in a specific way + if i had a problem, I’d just mute them or unfollow.

@diodelass and it feels incredibly bizarre and unfair for me (a person who doesn’t have any trouble having access to food and housing) to hassle somebody who’s starving about not being polite or considerate enough to me in their attempts to not starve.

Totally different story with someone just posting untagged porn or violence or something IMO, where it’s hard to argue that one -shouldn’t- exercise particular care around such things.

re: cws, subtoot

@diodelass I can't figure out if I did this wrong or if Mastodon just doesn't support loading boosts by URL, but this didn't work for CWing boosts: ben.lubar.me/dump/emoji-test-6

@diodelass @mwlucas I run an account about using a text editor that is almost 50yo. It would require a vast leap of the imagination to consider anything I post offensive (except maybe the word-play). However even I still CW my stuff. You can too, people. It's not hard.

Also, can confirm it improves the audience (helping narrow those who wouldn't care, piquing the interest of those who would).

@ed1conf @phessler @diodelass @mwlucas Woah I feel really stupid because I have no idea what CW means

re: cws, subtoot, examples of cw topics

@jaj @ed1conf @diodelass @mwlucas CW is "Content Warning", and is commonly used to hide topics that may cause people distress. Or spoilers for mass-media. Or punchlines.

Examples include "pol" (politics), food, eating disorders, violence, Avengers, GoT (Games of Thrones), etc.

"show more" / "show less" is using the CW feature.

re: cws, subtoot, examples of cw topics

@phessler @jaj @ed1conf @diodelass @mwlucas I see, the modern version of NSFW. Thanks

re: cws, subtoot, examples of cw topics

@jaj @ed1conf @diodelass @mwlucas can be, but not exclusively

re: cws, subtoot, examples of cw topics

@phessler @jaj @diodelass @mwlucas Or even used akin to an email Subject line, collapsing longer/rambling posts or technical details into smaller screen real-estate so as to not clutter others' timelines. I know not everybody (very few folks for that matter) wants multiple lines of ed(1) session transcription in their timeline, so I tend to sequester them behind a CW.

re: cws, subtoot, examples of cw topics

@ed1conf @phessler @jaj @diodelass @mwlucas Every line of ed(1) transcripts are beautiful

re: cws, subtoot

@diodelass

unfortunately it had to be CW'd for people who automatically react to any discussion of content warnings with kneejerk nonsense, so they never learned it

(but they'd have refused it anyway 😜)

cws, subtoot

@diodelass I still have the same objection to it: everyone is sensitive to something different. It is generally impossible to even predict what someone might want to CW (I've seen "food", "eye contact", "Mother's day" — all of which were completely unexpected to me). So the only logical choice would be to CW everything, which is just silly. Hence I don't. And I'm fine with people who don't like my way of expression not following me. I'm not building a brand or anything…
