i wonder: if someone were to try and build a machine comparable with 8/16-bit home computers of the past, but with modern parts (microcontrollers/fpgas/whatever) and modern peripherals (monitors, keyboards, mice, storage media), how possible would that be?
@devurandom There's a number of those, mostly emulators running on modern hardware. Couple of new microcontroller-based 8-bits, 8-Bit Guy's youtube reviews them sometimes.
@devurandom Interesting coincidence, just ran across https://spectrum.ieee.org/geek-life/hands-on/build-your-own-altair-8800-personal-computer
@devurandom very easy it seems http://www.vintageisthenewold.com/fpga-base-commodore-64-ultimate-64-is-now-under-production/
Must not buy, just not buy...
A bit of youth trauma here, I had a TI99/4a and was so jealous of the apple ii and c64 people...
@pvaneynd aww *offers lots of hugs and understanding, even though i personally haven't owned any of these computers either*
@pvaneynd also, wow, that "ultimate-64" sounds awesome! ^_^
@devurandom I've seen a bunch of kits using micro-controllers emulating specific computers like the C64 or Apple 1, and people doing new designs on old concepts just for fun.
@devurandom It's entirely possible. There's plenty of YT vids of people building Z80 systems (Z80s still being readily available as microcontrollers themselves these days).
