why is "set background=dark" not a default option in vim? do people still use black-on-white terminal emulators frequently enough?
@Sasha well, it seemed to me like the default setting in most distros and desktop environments is white on either black or some other dark color (like semitransparent purple in ubuntu)...
@devurandom That's true. The key is not to use a desktop environment ;) Anyway, it's hard to find a default that suits everyone so, I don't know ? Maybe the person who chose that default for vim uses a light-background terminal ?
@devurandom what's wrong with black on white, it's quite decent and it fits with most desktops
@pony nothing wrong with it, just the fact that it's rarely the default setting.
@devurandom It is in RHEL at least. Or maybe even generally for gnome-terminal. Not sure.
@devurandom Ido occasionally
@pasqui023 yeah, i've got quite some responses like that. guess i was wrong.
@devurandom it looks like vim actually tries to guess whether the terminal is using a dark or light background? it's not reliably detectable tho
dark WOULD make more sense as the default assumption if it can't figure out the terminal's specific behaviour tbh, everyone uses dark terminals ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@00dani yeah. it seems to use dark when vim is running in the linux console and bright when running in X-based terminal emulators.
@devurandom Don't you ? It's so much easier on the eye.
