/dev/urandom @devurandom

so i've just got around 60000 rub to buy a new desktop (almost $1000), and i'm wondering if any of you have good :

1. i have no idea what kind of hardware is considered modern today
2. i'm not _planning_ on using it with linux, but also don't want to be badly surprised when i try it and turns out some piece of hardware doesn't work.

so far, i'm thinking:
- at least 16 gb of ram and 4 gb of video ram
- at least a terabyte of hard drive.

questions:
- amd, nvidia or intel?
- ssd or not?

@devurandom ssd is must have. Two disks are optimal - one small SSD for OS and second - HDD for data

okay. looks like out of the cards available for me, it's rx 550~580, which seem to all be supported on linux, and gtx 1050 ti and 1060, which also seem to work, but afaik it's better to go amd on ? they seem to have somewhat equal performance, at least judging by ?

@devurandom ime nvidia works better for linux but
idk it may have changed

@MightyPork the last time i checked, amd integrated better.

the "official" proprietary drivers are basically just a set of new libraries that replace ones in the already-good-enough open source ones?

@devurandom i mean yeah if you don't want to game on Linux (which you don't, judging from the post), anything will work

@MightyPork i actually played quite some games on linux with the open-source drivers on the computer i currently use, and noticed very little difference between them and windows.

@devurandom i usppose... it's the shader-heavy 3D stuff, also poorly optimized, where i've seen the most difference

@MightyPork ah, okay.

either way, i'll bet on amd, because i've googled the nvidia card and already found a few posts where folks had trouble installing linux with it.

found this one:

cpu: Intel Core i3 6100 3700MHz
motherboard: Intel H110
ram: 16Gb DDR4
ssd: 120Gb
hdd: 3000Гб
no DVD drive
gfx: AMD Radeon RX 580 4096Mb
power: 700W
Midi-Tower
no OS pre-installed

59000 rubles.

@MightyPork seems like no. the cheapest option with an i5, while more impressive, also costs over 70000 rub.

@devurandom 1) SSD + HDD 2) none of them has 100% linux-compatible, you need to look for certain model and certain distro
