@cyberpunkirl As I understand it, his projects leverage capitalism to develop projects that are aimed at helping humanity. All their profit is fed back into the system to make it work. He dumped all of his millions from Paypal into Tesla and SpaceX, even though he figured like 10% chance either would actually work out.
Tesla's goal: hasten the widespread adoption of the electric car to cut down on greenhouse gas emission
SpaceX's goal: 'back up' our species with a Mars colony
@wednesday @cyberpunkirl He could already be helping humanity in a concrete way by paying his employees a living wage and allowing them to unionize, but he doesn't seem too interested in that. http://inthesetimes.com/working/entry/20418/Elon-Musk-Workers-low-wage-organizing-unions-silicon-valley
Never trust anyone who claims to have humanitarian goals but treats their employees like shit.
@matt @cyberpunkirl Thanks for the info, I'll read up.
@wednesday @cyberpunkirl Paypal is notably missing from that list. :-P
On the Tesla and SpaceX side, it's mostly charisma and a really excellent PR department. There are definitely some positive externalities, not going to deny that, but they're way oversold relative to other aspects of those corporations.
I think he believes his own story, tbh. Which makes me kind of nervous.
@cyberpunkirl Excuse me, m'dude, but I do believe Musk is for UBI (https://themerkle.com/elon-musk-makes-case-for-universal-basic-income-again/), which I consider one of the first steps to a socio-capitalist system. So, yeah, he's hoarding wealth, and intends to distribute it at some point.
Basically, you're right, for now, but wait and you might agree with him later.
