Mastodon seems to be a perfect experiment. New instances are cheap and can have their own specific rules for content. Each sysadmin often asks for a bit of money on Patreon to help the local community of dozens or hundreds or a few thousand users.

So some of the resistance to paying a big corporation like Facebook or Twitter or a faceless Global website like Wikipedia may no longer there. There's also no excuse for feeling that 'oh, someone else will pay for it, I can't afford it'. You can see the only 70 users on your instance so if you aren't willing to pitch in $2 or $5 a month to the person who's running your social network instance for fun then who will?

@compthink A group of us are thinking of setting up a consumer co-op instance. drawing on the #platformcoop thinking over the past few years. Small monthly fee, policies set democratically by the users, any surplus beyond operating expenses going either as bounties for platform improvements or rebates of credit to members.
