I seem to remember a while back someone on my TL was working on a speed run split app of some sort. Is that any of y'all, or do you have any recs? @nihilazo is looking for a native Linux option: tiny.tilde.website/@nihilazo/1

Please boost for reach. So, anyone that is working on FOSS projects like web apps, sites, Linux apps, desktop environments, or other user interfaces, please let me know if you want them tested for accessibility. I can do both CLI, web, and GUI testing, and app testing on Android. I'm running Debian (on a ChromeBook but that's not too important), so just give me the name of the package, or the URL of the site or app. I can also do Flatpak!

tangent, silly, my search history, adhd

While I'm scrolling through my web history, here's a fairly-complete history of my web searches from yesterday (all originating from DDG, for the record).

These are in chronological order and unedited other than the selection process, and I omitted all the boring tech searches for my actual job and anything boringly personal:

Correction: my gender was _searching_ for ℰ, "googling" isn't even accurate because I double-checked and I was using DuckDuckGo as usual.

I've been trying to train myself out of using "google" as a synonym for "search" because I generally wish Google a very stop monopolizing the internet, and as demonstrated here, it's not even accurate for me most of the time. Heck!

Current gender: googling "cursive upper-case E"

@luci That 'femboys are harming us all by identifying the way they feel fits them best' attitude is indistinguishable to me from the attitude that certain truscummy binary trans people have towards non-binary trans people. And so I don't stand for it.

details on my pid adventures

Used what browser processes I had running already to track down the error message and figure out what it meant. Then using the Activity Monitor I forunately already had running, discovered that some runaway Nvim plugin had spawned tens of thousands of node processes.

Managed to free enough processes to run a pkill -f command and get things back to normal. Phew!

Show thread

Well that's a new one...just ran out of pid's on OS X. Exciting times!

I don't have screenshots, but from looking at the source of glitch-soc it seems like they also have a reasonable interface for this. Looks like Hometown uses the stock Mastodon interface, but I just filed an issue to look into improving on that.

In the spirit of not complaining without trying to fix it, I also intend to comment on the Mastodon issue, but right now my brain is tired of digging into this so that will have to wait for a bit.

Show thread

And in this instance it's especially silly, because the first two other interfaces I checked (Pinafore and Tusky) have entirely reasonable interfaces for this, both have dedicated and labelled "multiple choice" options, and neither have the radio buttons (because they're totally unnecessary for creating a poll!)

Show thread

I'm grimly unsurprised that Eugene pooh-poohed this exact complaint already (because multiple-choice polls are "not a priority" and it would make the interface "too complex", and it's fine as "an easter egg"): github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

I have a bone to pick with a definition of "complex" that results in hiding basic features behind UX mechanisms that are impenetrable to the average user, creating a two-tiered experience where nerds like me who are steeped in How Computers Work get to have extra "easter egg" features like...allowing people to choose more than one poll option 🙄

Show thread

Okay so I just went to create a multiple-choice poll and hot damn if that's not a totally undiscoverable interface, I was flummoxed for much longer than I should have been.

(For those who haven't encountered this, you have just guess that clicking on the radio buttons next to the poll will change them to checkboxes :blobfacepalm:)

more details, because brevity is not my strength

Firstly apologies if you were the person who voted on an earlier version of this post, I am an inveterate delete-and-redraft-er.

Anyway. Goals from a different angle, I'm looking for:
- A protected acct that's somewhat less connected to the rest of my internet identity
- A local timeline that's more specifically gendery/trans
- Somewhere to post my own more gendery/trans posts that don't quite fit on my main
- An acct from which to follow/interact with other folks' alts

I'm yet another transfemme techie/maker, so I would fit in places that hit that overlap, but am not specifically seeking that out (and would prioritize the trans/queer side).

Sizewise, I just want enough folks that I'm not the center of attention as the new kid, and that the local timeline has stuff going by.

Still pretty tentative/wary of being put in any particular trans/gender boxes, so an instance that's not cool with e.g. bi/pan lesbians or nb lesbians is probs not gonna be my jam.

Hey Masto, looking for instance recs for a new alt, for more gendery/trans posting, and for following the same.

Goals:
- Queer and/or trans(-femme) focused (not necessarily exclusively)
- Cool with nb transfemme folks
- Smallish-to-medium sized (~5k ish users or less?)
- Bonus: some of my follows already there
- Joinable, of course (invite/by request is great)

If you want more criteria, check my reply to this post. I put a poll with the two big-ish instaces that seem to fit in case y'all have opinions about them, but if you have specific recs/experience (with these or others!) then reply away. Thanks! :boost_ok:

celeb couples, parasocial delight

Today's reminder brought to you by the fact that I JUST today realized that the Zendaya in this 2017 video is of course the same Zendaya that he's now dating.

I'm pretty wary of fawning over celebrity couples, especially when they're not thrilled about their relationship being in the spotlight in the first place, and I doubt there's a direct causal link there, but nevertheless I enjoy the added layer in retrospect ☺️
