Also, successfully tracked down and resolved an issue that involved any invocation of gcc and co resulting in an infinite loop. As you might imagine, this caused some trouble with, uh, running the vast majority PKGBUILDs.

(Tracked it down to something funky in hardening-wrapper. After some research, the internet advised me it was deprecated anyway, so I just removed it and my build system is once again happy as a clam)

Finally on the other side of yet another long-delayed full upgrade of my Arch system, and my Firefox can once again run Javascript.

Jury is still out on whether that's an overall improvement or not :blobcatfingerguns:

geography meme, 50 states challenge

Thanks to @devurandom for crossposting here and reminding me of this. 🙂 I'm always impressed when folks not from the US can name our states, your $6mil is solid, and I'm honored to be among the West Coast states of confidence 😄

I'd be super sunk if this was about...any other country, really. UK, Brazil, Japan, China, Germany, Spain, France, Russia...I can name a few cities in each, but I think Australia is the only other country I can name any administrative subdivisions of at all, and even there I'm only really confident in a couple.

Geography is neat! 🌍

geography meme, 50 states challenge

Here's a blank map if you wanna play along. I pulled this one from Wikipedia, the one going around is frankly terrible - the borders are simplified past the point of reason, and they left off the two non-contiguous states.

Other pairs that I imagine are common confusions but didn't make my list because of personal experience:

Washington/Oregon (I've lived in one or the other since I was 3yo)
Arizona/New Mexico (visited grandparents in Arizona)
Kentucky/Tennessee (born in TN, family in KY)

Another one I know but have to think about is Montana/Wyoming, because they're the two big empty states, but the mountains in Montana always get me to the right place (plus I drove through it on a roadtrip a couple years back, so now it's really in there). Similarly I get the names of Maryland and Massachusetts confused, but only if I'm not thinking about it.

Any other fun confusion pairs I missed? Ohio/Iowa? How well would y'all do?

That $50mil map thing going around Twitter has pointed out some interesting state pairs for me.

Scenario: you get $1 mil for each correctly-labelled state on a unlabeled map of the US. You get $0 if you label any wrong; you can leave blanks.

I grew up with a pretty good geography program so I can confidently label all 50 states, but with big money on it, the pairs I would consider skipping, roughly in order of confidence:

Vermont/New Hampshire

For the challenge, I'd probably go ahead and label everything after Kansas/Nebraska, for $46mil - the rest are just ones I've historically had trouble with but have enough context now to be confident in, or have other clues: Mississippi obviously borders its namesake river, I know where Chicago and Springfield are in Illinois and have family in Kentuckiana, the UP is definitely in Michigan, and Colorado is definitely part of the four corners.

This is the song I put on repeat on the drive home a year ago, and the refrain that I shouted along with then is as relevant as ever:

Everything's gonna get lighter
Even if it never gets better

personal, relationship--, sadposting, pandemic

While everyone else is marking their various pandemic anniversaries, I'm noting that as of like an hour ago, it's been a year since the de facto end of my nine-year relationship.

I know it's been a rough fucking year for everyone, and I've actually had it pretty good in general pandemic terms, but losing my live-in life partner going into this was not my favorite.

And also: reflecting, I've also learned a shitton about myself and invested in my friendships in new ways. So, here's to another year of growth, hopefully a little less painful this time around.

Mars looks the way you would expect a planet to look. Mercury looks like a moon. Venus looks like a smudge but it's believable that a planet with a bunch of thick atmosphere would like like that. But Jupiter and Saturn? Like wtf you could not make this up

I am sooo in love with this image.

shitty person death

I grew up with the Rush Limbaugh show as a regular fixture in the house and on the car ride to school and back.

He was a vile human who utterly and thoroughly committed his life to making the world a worse, more selfish place, and was sadly rather successful at doing so.

Good riddance, he shall not be missed. I'm glad his ability to affect and infect our world directly is no more.

I'm not an afterlife kinda guy, but may his legacy forever be nothing but a mark of shame, may his memory be forgotten except as a warning.

We use a platform called Aptible at work that I use somewhat infrequently.

Thanks to a wide range of sci-fi stories, I invariably try to type it as "ansible" the first couple times and have to stare at the screen for a few seconds to remember what the heck our deployment platform is actually called.

Now I wanna read Hyperion again. Also, I just looked it up and (re-)learned that the term was originally coined by LeGuin, rad!
