hey if you dont like mastodon and you're on mastodon.social... maybe try another instance before giving up on it entirely?

@chr don't go to cybre.space, though, there be dragons

@chr right? Go to targaryen social house or something.

the vibe of masto varies widely from instance to instance and flagship probably isn't an optimal fit for most people.

@chr I was on m.s for about 45 seconds before I realized it wasn't the kind of instance I was looking for.

I'm glad I decided to find a second one instead of giving up, though, cos I ended up here!

this goes double when recommending mastodon to new people. don't send them to masto. social, they'll likely have a much better experience elsewhere!

@chr but not on cybre.space, for there be dragons! :P bad dragons!

@chr I'm glad cybre.space was recommended to me when I first got started. I probably wouldn't have stuck around on flagship.

@chr This part is highly subjective I think. I would not recommend starting on a small instance, for example, because it's much harder to find new people to follow.

@impiaaa
I'm on a tiny instance, and my final impetus to join was my RL acquaintance who started a new instance and invited people. But what made the tiny instance usable and we'll connected was a welcome casserole of follow recommendations from someone who knows me well.
@chr

@chr If you’re a #horse, #pony, #zebra, #mule, #donkey, or other #equine, @Baroriam does a good job of providing green pastures over here.

@chr I wish there was a better way of conveying this concept to people.

@chr yeah i'd say the big issue facing this site/tool/thing is that people assume that it's only one instance, like twitter or tumblr, and then give up on it

if you don't like #mastodon, maybe try another instance that fits better your interest/values, or even another plattform that is part of the #fediverse like #plemora, #friendica, #hubzilla, #gnusocial...

Not everyone likes the design, or the microblogging aspect, or...and that's why there are many plattforms that are all interoperable.

Choose one, talk to all.

(if you still want to leave, please think about giving us some feedback, so that we can learn and improofe from it)

@esp @chr I had a discussion with a friend who tried to convince me that Mastodon is dead and/or full of boring people. Schrödinger's Mastodon

@AdalwinAmillion @chr If it's dead then the only way not to make it dead is to participate, no?

Also boring people? Nah, I've found more interesting people in 2 months here than I've encountered on birdsite in 2 years

@AdalwinAmillion @chr @esp I wonder how they could find the people on Masto boring

@a_breakin_glass @AdalwinAmillion @chr if these are similar people to the once I knew on twitter, then it's the lack of drama they would find boring x)

@chr Thanks for saying this. I'm not 100% m.s is my speed; at the same time I don't know what IS my speed... I guess I'm afraid trying out a bunch of instances will be exhausting, sort of like trying out every club at school to see which one works for you

@tardybox i'll recommend octodon.social for a large techy instance, witches.town, cybre.space or toot.cafe if you're looking for a medium size community, or tootplanet.space,...

if you want an invite to cybre just lemme know and i'll DM you!

@chr agreed, I logged into my older account on the main instance a couple of months ago and instantly felt overwhelmed XwX;;;

but, also thankful I found smaller places to exist & toot :blobpeek:

@chr Is there a rough guide to the tones of different instances? Like, here's the comic-SF roleplay instance, here's the people chatting up tech talk, here's the folks doing grand-strategy gaming, that level of guidance?

@Austin_Dern no but this should really exist tbh

@chr do you think mastodon dot social could improve with better community management or is there no hope for it?

@chr I'm interested in finding an instance that fits me a bit better myself. But I'm probably going to keep using .social either way.

@chr I don't dislike masto, but I've also tried perusing for other instances and I find it difficult to easily search for one and plug into it. Not sure how that works unless you get invited one to organically via some previous relationships.
