Trans kids, hormone treatment

“Trans children aren’t old enough to get sex hormones” is an argument for giving all children, cis AND , puberty blockers until age 16.

I’m not necessarily saying we should or shouldn’t give trans kids hormones but like, think about what you’re saying and what it means. If trans kids are not old enough to know their gender and which puberty they’re going through, neither are cis kids.

@Vann

Real talk: I *definitely* was not okay with how much of my sex ed growing up had this tone of You Are Changing Forever And There's Nothing You Can Do About It Oh ho ho~ and was REALLY interested in the idea of stopping it somehow by like, getting my pituitary gland extracted or something.

@cassolotl I'm really curious about this subject. Do we know if many people regret transitionning during childhood yet ?
Because it's all about that in the end, in this argument. If less than 50% of kid transitionning don't regret it, the argument becomes more or less null and void.

@Panda_Fuligineux My understanding is that trans kids who're accepted and allowed to transition are far less likely to be depressed and anxious than kids who aren't. I'm not aware of any longer-term studies though!

@cassolotl
That's my guess too, but I have to admit I really haven't any idea in fact.

Thank you 🙂

@Panda_Fuligineux No worries! :)

@cassolotl @Panda_Fuligineux re: "regret" - I had a stupid hairstyle when I was 13-14 I regretted afterwards. We don't stop kids getting "fashionable" haircuts or buying "cool" clothes that they regret when it is no longer 1987, so why should we stop them exploring gender presentations? certainly not "regret"

Trans kids, hormone treatment

@ananana @cassolotl I don't have any problem with that, but what might be more problematic (although totally not my problem 😂 ) is taking irreversible (or hardly reversible? I honestly have no idea) choices when you're a kid.

I'm not concerned with these questions, that's why I don't know : maybe this kind of decision is never regretted (I hope for them!).

In any case, I think we should support "exploring gender representation" as you said. These norms are annoying.

Trans kids, hormone treatment

@Panda_Fuligineux @ananana I kinda feel like, now we have the medical ability to delay puberty or change the puberty that happens, any puberty is a choice. A cis child experiencing the puberty that happens to their body without intervention is a choice. So a child can choose to go ahead with their no-meds puberty at whatever age it happens on its own, no blockers, a child should also be able to make the choice to have hormone treatment at that age.

Trans kids, hormone treatment

@cassolotl @ananana I'm sorry if I'm annoying with my questions (you can tell me if it's the case, no problem, I'm just curious about that subject and gender identity in general because all these questions are new to me), but is there a way to go back after a transition ? We can transition after a transition ?

Trans kids, hormone treatment

@Panda_Fuligineux @ananana That's not my area, but let me tell you, going through whatever puberty your body goes through by default is no less reversible.

Trans kids, hormone treatment

@ananana @Panda_Fuligineux I'm thinking that a person assigned male at birth could take hormones to grow breasts and then later have a double-mastectomy to "masculinise" their chest. And I'm thinking a person who was assigned female at birth and took hormones to have a deeper voice could get voice therapy and maybe surgery to have a more "feminine" voice.

@cassolotl @ananana OK, thank you.

That's a very good point. And I imagine that if a kid really wants it, it might be a strong choice, as it is "against the norms".
