i used to roll my eyes when old people talked about how things were better when they were kids but i'm starting to see the ways they're right. a lot of it is nostalgia but there's also the reality that we're seeing the effects of late capitalism in ways that weren't showing yet

and a lot of them don't realize or won't admit that capitalism is the problem but like. everything they complain about is a symptom. even secularization is tied up in the consumerism & individualism that capitalism is built on

i kind of don't know if i believe secularization is a wholly good thing any more. like mainstream christianity in america is definitely terminally fucked but the loss of spirituality & ecstatic experiences is not a net good. it's a terrible loss
