@CoronaCoreanici the takeaway, I think, is that there's at least some chance that some totally unexpected technological development, one that may not even originate as an attempt at solving the climate crisis, will nevertheless solve it.

is it something I would bank on? heavens no, we should still be doing everything we know to fix the climate. but the thought does help keep me sane at night

@CoronaCoreanici the punch line is that the polluting technology was the horse, which was resulting in a lot of horse manure everywhere, and the new technology that solved the problem by replacing it was the automobile. think about how difficult it would have been to come up or even predict this solution if you had to try to solve the problem of horses making too much manure back then

@CoronaCoreanici there's this passage in Super Freakonomics (I am paraphrasing greatly from memory) where they describe how people were freaking out for a while about how their modes of transportation were polluting their cities terribly, and the problem seemed completely intractable, until one day it was resolved by a completely unexpected technology
