so i just installed #ubuntu yesterday and i have no heckin clue what i'm doing.
trying to install signal desktop and this is all it gives me? do i just type this into terminal or what
#TechSupport #PleaseHelp
It'll add the app's repository (link kinda thing) to the repository of your computer.
Then it'll download that app and install it for you.
@alex copy/paste each line into a terminal and press enter after pasting each. should work.
@alex They intend for you to copy/paste it into the commandline, yeah. Ideally, you should vet that to make sure it's not gonna install malware or delete your harddrive or whatever. You seem like you might not have enough experience to do that yourself? I'm not sure if I do either, but maybe someone on here could help you with that part.
@alex I can explain what each line do if you want :)
@alex you *can* copy/paste it in, as long as you trust the source
"curl | sudo apt-key" downloads a file from updates.signal.org and sends it to the `apt-key` command with heightened permissions. it adds a key that allows your system to verify that it is contacting the right repository.
'echo "deb ...."' is adding that repository to your list of repositories, so that you can install packages from it
@alex and the last line updates the package cache to include that new repository, then installs the application
@alex (sorry if this was too condescending, I didn't know exactly what you meant by 'no heckin clue' so i assumed you weren't sure what those commands actually did. sorry if that was a bad assumption)
@alex
Yes ;) Better copy-paste than typing manually, though
It's generally a good idea to understand what the commands are doing before passing them, https://explainshell.com/ is a good resource for starters, or just ask here !
@alex i see you already got some good answers on this one, but wanted to mention i'm always happy to help with questions like this.
@alex
yes, Alex.
One by one.
