Defcon, covid
@maloki Extra data points: Who wore masks, and who of those really did it all the time (e.g. not taking them off for a 30min coffee chat).
Don’t know whether that’s still a thing in the US, but Froscon in Germany for example requires folks to wear FFP2/N95 masks.
Defcon, covid
Hey, everyone who went to defcon, I know it as lovely to meet people face to face, but I have an important assignment for you!
Keep close track on how many people (I guess of the ones you know, but you can pool your data probably) came home with covid from it.
Extra bonus points if you count the numbers of anyone who catches long covid too.
I feel like it's valuable if we actually start building up data like this, so people can make decisions about if it's safe or not.
Ty for your participating, feel free to take a cookie.
Bad story idea of the day: A wizard invents a spell that generates huge amounts of energy by using "evil" as a raw ingredient, thus permanently making people less evil. Soon, the entire economy is powered by people using the spell. But then they start running out of evil people in the world, and the economy collapses! It's called "We've Hit Peak Evil"
"No, see," the fairy Queen said, "when we ask someone for their first-born, it is because that is what is most precious to them. You offering that shows us we must ask for something else."
"Oh," he said. "What then?"
"What is most precious to you: your certainty you are right."

> The question is whether, if important causality occurs on the macro level, you have any capability or responsibility for dealing with it at the micro.
> Failure to cope says no — if only political problems are legitimate, only political solutions are admissible.
> This is your life. You do not have time to wait for the revolution to begin living it. You will always be able to find someone to give you permission not to live it. But no one is coming along to live it for you.
a really good article about the problems I have with a lot of "the REAL problem is capitalism!" takes
"There's a coyote on the train with us."
I ignored this comment, as I ignored many comments I overheard in public.
Then I realized I was alone.
I looked around to find the mysterious passenger who'd spoken, but I only saw the coyote.
"Was that you announcing yourself," I asked with a tired laugh. I'd been working overtime for no pay.
The canine stared at the 'empty' spot beside me, cowering.
We both scurried off two stations early.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but PCOS is absolutely an intersex condition. Today, I essentially needed to choose between the hormones generally prescribed to trans women or injections generally given to trans men. My body does not produce enough of either combination of hormones to function in a healthy way. HRT is healthcare and is valid for whatever reasons you decide to take it. End of rant. #theVent
@fluffy God I feel like so much would be improved on the Internet if we moved back to defining protocols instead of platforms
@cwebber One of the reasons I'm a firm believer in multi-discipline teams is how I saw field researchers, various types of designers, and engineers cross-pollinate at PARC and other labs.
Managed to get ahold of our (super cool) county epidemiologist, and I've got some info to share about getting tested and vaccinated for monkeypox in Ohio:
