unfiction about someone discovering how to produce estrogen at home on-the-cheap

how may of y'all have searched something like "estradiol synthesis" on google scholar or something similar

@SuricrasiaOnline it really sucks that all the estrogens and androgens are these super complex organic molecules

why can't it be some simple hydrocarbon produced with a basic reaction?

but nooo, it's (1S,3aS,3bR,9bS,11aS)-11a-Methyl-2,3,3a,3b,4,5,9b,10,11,11a-decahydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthrene-1,7-diol and (1S,3aS,3bR,9aR,9bS,11aS)-1-Hydroxy-9a,11a-dimethyl-1,2,3,3a,3b,4,5,8,9,9a,9b,10,11,11a-tetradecahydro-7H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-7-one

@SuricrasiaOnline they're derived from cholesterol with Molecular Bullshit Enzyme Magic

@unascribed @SuricrasiaOnline thinking about a NileRed video titled sth like "Making estradiol in my garage"

@noiob @SuricrasiaOnline the way they make it for medications is probably a fucking trade secret

@unascribed @SuricrasiaOnline "Breaking into a pharmaceutical research company to leak their synthesis"

@noiob @unascribed @SuricrasiaOnline It does happen, as far as I know. I don’t have connections myself but I’ve heard of three different groups in various countries over the last couple of years

@noiob @ghost_bird @SuricrasiaOnline (that are supposedly made with laboratory grade ingredients and are not safe for use)

@unascribed @ghost_bird @SuricrasiaOnline I mean, yeah, I'd say don't take sketchy medication from online in general

@SuricrasiaOnline it reaches a point where it almost seems like it'd be easier to figure out how to modify gonads to produce the other hormone

(but a permanent fix is not profitable so if that is possible it would receive no research)

@unascribed thats no help to me bc I don't have gonads. I've always fantasized about some injectable cluster of cells which performs the task, though that might be even more far fetched

@SuricrasiaOnline yeah my fantasy is a little secure implantable self-powering device that can be reconfigured on-the-fly

@SuricrasiaOnline if i had guaranteed permanent access to replacement hormones i would get de-gonaded in an instant

@unascribed in a way, I feel slightly more comfortable with them removed because getting hormones is now a necessity and not something some cis person might see as "optional"

@marlyn it is fiction that insists that it's nonfiction. an example is a story told in the form of a wikipedia article, or a fake news article, or a documentary youtube video. essentially it is fiction that doesn't contain any signals that it is fictional

@marlyn I would add that @SuricrasiaOnline writes some very enjoyable unfiction! 😄

@marlyn @SuricrasiaOnline Oh, and SCP is a cool unfiction project, though I'm not sure it describes itself that way

@SuricrasiaOnline @marlyn TIL that my final university project was unfiction and I would've used that term if I knew about it RIP 😭

@SuricrasiaOnline Now I want NileRed on YouTube to film a "Making Estradiol from {really common household thing}"... Even if impractical, that'd be really cool.

@SuricrasiaOnline Hadn't ever had that pressing of a need, but I -have- tried to learn some basic O-chem with similar thoughts.

A "lab leak" story where the main character is working in a lab and unknowingly gets contaminated with bacteria that make you boob, and they don't notice but the rest of the lab does and rolls with it, until HR comes in one day to ask about updating the main character's paperwork and suddenly the main character realizes: "oh."

@SuricrasiaOnline have you read that Neil Gaiman short story about someone discovering a cure for cancer that has the side effect of switching your sex? warning: from what I remember it was a bit of a downer. But if you wanna dig it up, I think it's in Fragile Things, or maybe Smoke and Mirrors.
