you know you're in deep when all the products you're looking at don't list prices and instead have a "request a quote" button
@SuricrasiaOnline You're looking at high-end i1's, aren't you? 😛
(X-Rite basically owns everyone who does this commercially but short of "no, you don't understand, I'm trying to do mass spectrometry, but with visible light" precision.)
basically a product suggestion, not exactly solicited
@SuricrasiaOnline Oh, right, the actual recommendation: you may be interested in the ColorMunki ("Display" or "Design", same hardware with different plastic and software, but *not* the "Smile"). Decent, self-calibrating spectrophotometer (which means it can do things that emit light like a monitor or projector, as well as things that don't, like printers).
The included software is meh, but OSS support is pretty good. Works with ArgyllCMS and DisplayCAL. A little finicky sometimes, may need to be unplugged, replugged, and re-calibrated sometimes (takes maybe ten seconds?). May be iffy on a USB 3 host, but a USB 2 hub will do fine.
Should go for maybe $100-130 USD on eBay. Probably your cheapest reasonable option if you want to calibrate a printer at some point, or steal colors from ambient things. (Discontinued, the company was purchased by [drumroll] X-Rite.)
@SuricrasiaOnline you know you’re too deep when the grocery store you’re at usually doesn’t have prices listed
