@Minkovsky i want context on this, i don't know what accelerationist means

“Let’s vote for the worst candidate so that it brings societal upheaval faster”
Similar to “It’s cracked? Let’s break it so that it is easier to fix”. Needlessly to say, it is a very privileged opinion to have.

@gargron I use the term to refer to people who want to accelerate the emergence of a superintelligent (and hopefully friendly) AI in order to fix the world. A true 21st century messiah cult. And as @hypolite said, this is a very privileged viewpoint to have.

@Minkovsky Talking to some of these folks, Roko's Basilisk is their excuse for not helping people worse off than them.

"If I help those homeless people, the Singularity will simulate and torture versions of me and everybody I know."

What bullshit.

Most of 'em take for granted that not many people their age have read _I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream_.

@drwho @Minkovsky

These people have a VERY strange religion and I don't think I like their god

@natecull @drwho @Minkovsky it's a libertarian atheist apocolypse where the computer is the Messiah on a white horse.

@pnathan @natecull @Minkovsky Friend Computer.

@drwho @Minkovsky

like it's one thing to FEAR that you might be building an omnicidal death machine and go "uh, let's maybe not"

but to imagine that you might be and THEN say "quick, build it FASTER so it tortures us last...."

@natecull @Minkovsky Really the best thing you can say about the MIRI people is that they're dead-set against actually implementing any code until they have a mathematically proven AGI model that is harmless.

@natecull @Minkovsky Their god doesn't seem to like anybody much.

"I'm terrified of you, so I'll do horrible things to other people so you won't do them to me."
