Any recommendations for a text-to-speech Addon for Firefox?
@hollyamory sure! I didn't get any yet though. I tried 2 but they didn't work on my (Linux) laptop.
@hollyamory Someone told me, that you can switch to Firefox's Reader view and there is a narrate function, that reads the text to you by using you system's text-to-speech engine.
I like reader view (you can adjust the text), but unfortunately the narrate function is not there on my system. But I think it's a Linux problem so you might want to have a look yourself. The narrate function should be on the left panel.
@Jules Mozilla is currently working on a speech-to-text project called DeepSpeech. Some hope for the future! Maybe it will come built-in with the Firefox browser once fully developed.
@metalbob Interesting! I'm looking for text-to-speech though, it should read to me ^^ But like the idea too
@Jules I'm using festival-tts for reading local text files, and sometimes I add it to long-running commands to shout out loudly things like "Job Finished".
Don't know how to integrate it with the browser though.
@Jules What's your goal? The Narrate feature in Firefox Reader Mode uses the built-in speech engines of the operating system (Windows 10 OneCore and Speech API 5, Linux is SpeechDispatcher, and Mac the preinstalled system by Apple). So you can invoke reader mode, and then have Firefox read articles to you, including visual highlight of where in the text it currently reads.
