I've never done a "Game of the Year" thing before, but here it is:
My 2020 Game of the Year is ::THE LONGING::
The basic premise of the game is that you are a tiny creature (simply called A Shade) in an enormous underground kingdom who has been tasked with waking awaken the gigantic sleeping King after waiting for 400 REAL-LIFE DAYS. How you choose to spend that time is up to you.
For 2020, a year in which millions of people had to spend so much time in isolation, I found it strangely comforting to spend some of that time with A Shade. The game is such a unique experience; an exercise in extreme patience and solitude unlike anything else I've ever played. It reminds me of the Long Now project to build a clock that will tick for 10,000 years, a deep exploration of time to encourage people to think about the long-term future.
If you're interested in THE LONGING, beware of spoilers.

There are secrets and mysteries to be uncovered underground . . .
"Donkey Kong Country Returns" is such an underated game. This is the best 2D platformer I've played in heck of a long time.
I highly recommend it!
