a note from someone who migrated masto instances a few times, feel free to share with whoever needs it:

- figure out if it's vanilla masto, hometown, or glitch, forks have some neat features
- figure out post character limit
- could be said that long blocklist = good blocklist

beware:

- posts can't be migrated
- favs can't be migrated but bookmarks can be

migration process in next toot.

also going to put one of these into the world:

if you need somewhere to migrate from cybre.space to and you aren't shitty, g.s registrations are set to 'approval' but i approve pretty much anyone who looks like they aren't a spambot as soon as i notice/get notified

and i'll be keeping a pretty close eye on that for the next little while

I am temporarily setting Ten Forward registrations to approvals required for any folks from cybre.space who wish to migrate here. Just put it in the signup reason.

And if this is the tradeoff for having websites run by people and not companies, I'd rather have to move instances here and there than deal with...everything else that comes with corporate social media

As sad as it is to see cybre.space go, I am happy to see them have a long term exit plan. Giving people time to sort themselves out and an extremely long time to retrieve their data, that's the good shit.

Question: Do I move to my old account at wandering.shop or make tabletop.social my main?

@chr Thanks for all the time you've put into it over the years! I'll miss it!

the mastodon instance at cybre.space is retiring

for a lot of reasons, both personal and practical, i don't think i can effectively run a public mastodon instance any more, and i need to retire cybre.space. i want to do this responsibly and make sure everyone has a chance to migrate and export properly, so here is the plan for the instance retirement (feel free to share this link around): cybre.space/~chr/cybre-space-e

due to ongoing moderation load issues and understaffing, between now and 1 november, the instance may be undermoderated. for other instances, if this poses an issue for you, i encourage you to use federation tools at your discretion. i would only ask that you be clear and public about your decisions so that cybre.space users can figure out where they will be able to migrate their accounts.

thank you

What are the good spots for reliable reviews these days?

it has the nicest macro feature i've ever seen in software. it was missing a feature I liked from Audacity ("mute the thing I have selected"), and it took all of ten minutes to make a command for it and bind it to a key combo

@Canageek for future reference, i typically use r12a.github.io/uniview/ to get the unicode character corresponding to a given symbol (type a guess for a word which might be in the name, like "times", into the search box and click "text")

if you know the LaTeX there are probably sites which have those mappings as well, although i'm not so familiar with them

once you have the character in unicode, pasting it into wiktionary or wikipedia can be a great resource

it's only a "podcast" if it's retrievable by a podcatcher application pointed at a simple RSS feed, otherwise it's just sparkling talk show

it's surprisingly difficult to look up a symbol you don't remember from a textbook, since it's very hard to type without the name.

LaTeX just calls it \otimes it's a multiplication symbol inside a circle

"there is no reason for X to be exactly described by a simple analytical function" is not what you want to read at the start of the chapter on measuring and modeling X

Now going on about how our DM has to be very clear, after the time he tried to imply we were a magical realm where it was foggy and rainy all the time so the vampires could go out in day.

Only problem was it was winter in Vancouver at the time so the players say nothing unusual about days of drizzle at a time XD
